Here are some tips what you should do when you're experiencing a severe attack:
Immediately lay down on a firm surface. If you are driving, look for a safe place to stop at once!
Remain as motionless as possible keeping your eyes open and fixed on a stationary object. Do not look at moving objects such as the ceiling fan as this would make the attack worse (I had this unpleasant experience and can tell you that it is horrible!)
Do not try to drink water immediately as you'd be very likely to vomit. Remain in this position until the severe spinning passes. Then get up SLOWLY -- do not rush as this could re-activate the vertigo. After the attack subsides, you will normally feel exhausted and need to sleep for several hours. Do not force yourself to stay awake as sleeping is part of the recovery process.
If vomiting should persist and you are unable to take fluids for longer than 24 hours (or 12 hours in the case of children), please contact your doctor/physician. Your doctor will prescribe you some nausea medication and/or vestibular suppressant medication. If required, he or she may even admit you to the hospital if you are dehydrated.
